It's about the groove! Based in rhythms from Africa and the diaspora, Contemporary African Dance is an all level class where students explore full body expression rooted in West African, Caribbean, and American dance traditions. All levels welcome. Focus on wellness, community, improvisation, fluidity across movement styles, and delicious self-expression... Come get some!
Melissa Alexis is a dance artist and educator, a certified yoga and sustainability teacher, facilitator, choreographer, writer, and consultant. She is the founder of creative wellness consulting firm, LIFEForce 2.0, consulting to facilitate leadership training and other solutions infused with the principles of the arts and mindfulness. Melissa earned a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Spanish from Amherst College.
She has performed as a dancer in Cambridge-based Afro-Haitian modern dance company, Jean Appolon Expressions (JAE), in Rujeko Dumbutshena’s work, Jenaguru, presented at the Smithsonian and Brooklyn Museums, and in companies in New York City and Massachusetts. Her own contemporary dance works have been presented at Brooklyn-based The Creators Collective, Sarah Lawrence College, Tufts University, The Dance Complex, and Green Street Studios
