Wellness Pop-up

This month you'll have four opportunities to join a free lunchtime Wellness Pop-up event and experience a sampling of different fitness trends. You'll also meet Brett Auger, CIC's new Wellness program manager, who has just recently joined the team!

Brett will offer a variety of fitness styles during the Pop-up sessions at each of our Cambridge and Boston locations.

  • 12pm (Intro To Interval) No weights required for this introduction to interval training. Using a progression of easy-to-modify strength moves, this class will show you how easy it is to get in an effective, total body workout even in a small period of time.

  • 12:20pm (Core & More) Activate your abdominals in this quick, core-focused class that will help lengthen, stretch, and strengthen the primary pillar of the body through a variety of exercises.

  • 12:40pm (Zumba Rush) Come check out this high-energy dance party that will raise your heart rate and tone, various muscle groups, while you move to world music and easy-to-follow choreography. No previous experience required — just a desire to have fun and dance it out!

  • 1:10pm (Desk Stretch) Join us for a short session to help reverse the effects of sitting and to learn how to counter bad posture, forward lean, and neck tilt. Plus, you'll learn stretches to help relieve tension and stress through the back, neck, and shoulders.

A note from Brett: As the new program manager, I'm so excited to be joining CIC and continue to develop the Wellness benefits for both CIC staff and clients. With nearly a decade in workplace wellness, I know that each program and client is unique, and I look forward to experimenting boldly with CIC to expand our program to serve you better! I love working with groups and individuals to figure out how to best leverage their time and energy into results (i.e. happier, healthier lives)

CIC ArtWeek: Biomaterials Workshop

About the event:

Join Materiom Boston, in partnership with Fab@CIC, to create materials recipes from the abundant natural resources local to the Boston ecosystem. In this special ArtWeek edition of our weekend workshop series, Materiom Boston will guide you through the processes of making and using biomaterials in one jam-packed Bio-palooza! Participants will have the opportunity to make a materials recipe using locally sourced ingredients (mussel shells, coffee, and orange peels), as well as to transform the materials using fabrication tools to create beautiful and useful things such as reusable bags, tiles, and molds.

No formal science or maker experience is required! All you need is an open mind, a strong sense of curiosity, and a willingness to get a little sticky.

More about Biomaterials Working Group:

Fablabs around the world use tons of plastic, imported wood, and other materials with a substantial carbon footprint -- for single-use purposes. Even though some (small bits) of it can be recycled, that process is energy intensive and often requires inputs of virgin materials. What if we could make our own consumables that were biodegradable and sourced almost literally from our backyards?

Over the next several months, the Materiom Boston Biomaterials working group will be sampling, refining and documenting recipes using ingredients local to Boston. We’ll collaborate with other similarly minded groups who are undertaking the same challenge in their corners of the world. Our process will be an experiment in community-based science and will culminate in applying our materials to a public art project in Boston next summer. The working group is open to anyone who is interested in pushing forward sustainable materials in a collaborative way!

Check out a sampling of biomaterials recipes at Materiom.com.

Reiki Share Meetup

Are you curious to learn more about Reiki?
This session will be both educational and a group Reiki share for those who already practice.

At hospitals and clinics across America, Reiki is beginning to gain acceptance as a meaningful and cost-effective way to improve care. Personal interviews conducted with medical professionals corroborate this view. (1) "Reiki sessions cause patients to heal faster with less pain," says Marilyn Vega, RN, a private-duty nurse at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York. [Reiki] accelerates recovery from surgery, improves mental attitude and reduces the negative effects of medication and other medical procedures.

Would you like to join an ongoing Reiki circle or receive a Reiki session at CIC?
Please take a survey to help us find the best time and location.

Mindfulness at Work: How the Mind Creates and Relieves Stress

The mind is a powerful instrument, and like all powerful instruments, it can be used in helpful and harmful ways. Mindfulness is an effective tool for learning about and working with the mind, allowing us to harness our internal resources for strength, resilience, wellness, and creativity instead of falling victim to the toxic effects of stress. This program will explore the science and practice of mindfulness, the impact of stress on the mind and body, and practical tools and approaches for employing mindfulness in a fast-paced, high-stress world. Sign up!

Speaker Bio:

Ben Karlin has been practicing meditation for over a decade and a half and has traveled around the world studying how different cultures and traditions approach this ancient practice. He began teaching meditation and mindfulness at a health clinic in northern Thailand, helping patients take a more active role in maintaining their health through a deeper understanding of the mind and body. Since then, Ben has worked with individuals, businesses, and organizations worldwide, founding Free Form Minds to empower people with an awareness of the inner resources available to them. He is also a qualified MBSR instructor trained at the UMASS Medical School Center For Mindfulness.
