Japan Culture Series: Karuta

  • Anchor, 1st floor CIC Boston 50 Milk, Boston, MA 02119 (map)

Come experience karuta with the Japan Society of Boston and instructor Kyoko Hiromoto! Mrs. Hiromoto is the organizer of the Boston Nakamaro Karuta Club, and is a 1st-Dan, rank C player.

Karuta is the Japanese card matching game in which the beginning of a poem is read, and players need to be the first to grab the card with the rest of the poem written on it. Join us for an intro to this classic game, still popular today, and try your hand! Whoever grabs the most correct cards wins.

Karuta is played while kneeling on tatami mats, so please dress accordingly if you plan to play!

Click here for more information and to register. Registration is $5 for Japan Society of Boston members, $10 for non members.
