Visualizing GPS Displacements for Earthquake Cycle Physics with THREE.js

  • CIC Cambridge (101 Main St. location) - Cloud City, 14th floor 101 Main Street Cambridge, MA, 02142 United States (map)

For our May Maptime, Jimbo Wilson will tell us about visualizing GPS Displacements for Earthquake Cycle Physics with THREE.js. Jimbo is a software engineer with Google's People + AI Research Initiative (https://ai.google.com/pair).

To help earthquake researchers explore GPS displacement data, they created an open source visualization which draws geodetic velocity lines on top of an interactive map. Unlike existing approaches, which focus on small time slices or individual stations, their visualization can show all the data for a whole array of stations at once.

In this talk, Jimbo will walk you through how they did it, using THREE.js for fast, interactive rendering in the browser through WebGL. You'll learn the basics of using THREE.js to project geodata so that you can pursue using these powerful tools in your own projects.
