There are several initiatives currently underway, such as Expunge MA. How might we ensure individuals are aware of and access their new legal rights to increase confidentiality of their court records?

Juvenile and criminal records impede a young person’s access to housing, education and employment, preventing young people’s positive transition into successful adulthood. CfJJ, in partnership with youth-led organizers, successfully advocated for the creation of an expungement statute to allow individuals the opportunity expunge their juvenile and criminal records for offenses charged when they were younger than 21 year olds. In October 2018, a new law takes effect that allows for the expungement of certain records, but with certain limitations. Unfortunately, though this new right would help many young people move beyond their past transgressions, the eligibility criteria are complicated. Attorney assistance to help individuals screen their eligibility or to provide guidance and resources to take advantage of these new rights is significantly limited.

There are several initiatives currently underway, such as “Plogalong” - a mobile application that helps motivate people to clean up their streets, parks, and beaches. When you plog, you pick up trash as you go about your daily life... jogging, hiking, or simply walking down the street. “Plogalong” is looking to assemble a core team! Eva will serve as the project manager and UX designer, but we are in need of software developers to make the app a reality. This core team will begin constructing an iOS and Android app from the ground up using React Native. A tested clickable prototype of the app already exists, so we are ready to start development.

Abstract:

"Open Source Developers Are Security’s New Front Line"

Over the last five years, a shifting battlefield of attacks based on OSS consumption has emerged. Attackers effectively have a first-mover advantage based on responsible disclosures.

It’s become clear that we are in the middle of a systematic attack on the social trust and infrastructure used to distribute open source. In just a few years, we’ve gone from attacks on pre-existing vulnerabilities occurring months after a disclosure down to two days - and now, we are at the point where attackers are directly hijacking publisher credentials and distributing malicious components.

Open source developers are the front line of the new battle. We must not let them ruin the reputation of the things we’ve built. In this session, Brian Fox, 20 year open source developer, core contributor to Maven and CTO ofSonatype will:

  • Analyze, and detail, the events leading to today’s “all-out” attack on the OSS industry

  • Define what the future of open source looks like in today’s new normal

  • Outline how developers can step into the role of security, to protect themselves, and the millions of people depending on them

In this master class, we will introduce ten key NLP techniques that are predominantly used in the industry.

- Question Answering
- Neural Machine Translation
- Topic Summarization
- Natural Language Inference
- Semantic Role Labeling
- Text Classification
- Sentiment Analysis
- Relation extraction
- Goal-Oriented Dialogue
- Semantic Parsing

We will also illustrate a case study on NLP in Python using the QuSandbox.

Code for Boston

Code for Boston is a Code for America Brigade – a volunteer civic innovation organization created by Boston-area developers, designers, urban planners, and data geeks with an interest in solving civic and social problems through the use of creative technology.

The Future of Cannabis: Panel Discussion & Networking Event

If you weren't convinced that we are in the early stages of a cannabis boom unlike any other in history, then consider these stats:

  • In 2017, sales of medical and recreational cannabis in the U.S. were nearly nine times higher than Oreo cookies.

  • The Cannabis industry is on track to add as many as 340,000 full-time jobs by 2022.

  • In 2018, the marijuana industry created an estimated $28B-$34B in economic impact.

  • Total demand for marijuana in the U.S., including the black market, is around $52.5 billion.

At Branchfood we've seen plenty of new products making their way into the home. Cannabis is quickly advancing in both medicinal and leisure markets and some experts predict cannabis will develop into a craft industry similar to microbreweries and craft distilleries. Many options for infused food, drink, and personal care products made with cannabis derivatives like CBD and hemp are just the beginning. With so much innovation underway, 2019 will surely be the biggest year yet for industry development and maturation.

In continuation of our ongoing Future of Food panel series, we'll bring together leading industry experts for a discussion and networking event on the future of cannabis to understand the past, present, and future of the industry. Join us for this event and brush up on the latest on this fast-moving sector.

AI & Design: Creating AI-First Applications

AI & Design: Creating AI-First Applications

Artificial Intelligence has transitioned from a moonshot idea to accessible technology. As a result, the way we design, build, and market technology products is playing catch-up. To deliver the best experiences we must create AI-first applications, in the same way that we transitioned to create mobile-first applications.

In this talk, we will dive into three frontiers of AI-first applications: Computer Vision; Natural Language Processing; and Ambient Computing. Computer Vision will explore the possibilities enabled when cameras are combined with AI, and the unlikely side effects of training computers to “see.” Natural Language Processing will examine the rise of AI assistants from tech heavyweight companies and the ins-and-outs of voice input and and voice synthesis. Finally, Ambient Computing will unveil how invisible background AI learns from the world around us and makes our lives better.

AI-first is not an easy goal to accomplish. Accordingly, throughout the talk we will address the technology and data challenges that underpin working with AI technology. From data sources and training to deployment and inference, we will begin to understand the special considerations of AI-first and how to overcome them.
